I don’t think it’s possible to have a drearier day here in New Haven–it’s been raining all morning and it’s expected to continue through the afternoon. While I’m thankful that it’s not snow, given that we’re driving back to PA for the holiday tomorrow, I still wish it wasn’t so grey out. I loathe having lights on during the day (a pet peeve that Michael refuses to understand), but it’s just not possible to sit in natural light today. Blerg.
So to counteract the weather’s dullness, I’m going to share some lightness via fashion, a topic I haven’t touched upon since the wedding due to a desire to not be tempted into shopping (as well as the fact that I’ve been hanging out in lounge clothes more often than is generally deemed acceptable).
Some recent inspiration I’ve found (especially given that I have to pack to go to PA tomorrow) after the jump.
From the latest J.Crew catalog. I’m in the midst of making a scarf exactly like the one in the picture, and I’m loving the crazy combination of colors that they’ve been advocating lately. Some of their mixes are awesomely batshit-insane to boot.
Blair Waldorf from last week’s Thanksgiving episode of Gossip Girl. I will totally be wearing a version of this (silk blouse, pleated skirt) on Thursday and channel a little bit of Serena with a long scarf in my hair.
Same episode. Serena looks a bit…well…to put it this way, if Angela from The Office saw what she was wearing, she would instantly deem red and yellow whorish. But that necklace is gorgeous and I kind of love what they did with her hair. I’m going to likely sport a braid or two in my hair at the upcoming semi-formal Christmas party I’m going to in a few weeks…
Blair looks stunning, per usual, but her resolution to “walk around the Upper East Side like two society rejects in an Austen novel” made me hoot. And yes, her maid Dorota is walking with her.

There were a few more I wanted to include, but WordPress is seriously acting up whenever I try to add one right now (has been crashing both IE and Firefox all day, which is doubly annoying), but please feel free to add your favorite fall inspirations in the comments.

It’s dreary here in Baltimore as well. My husband is not looking forward to driving to NY (he has to work) tomorrow right after work. He’s trying to convince me to leave early Thursday.
I had one of those awful days in which it took 1 hours, 10 minutes to get to work (25 minute commute) and the same to get back. 2 car accidents and a police funeral turned what was supposed to be a quick meeting in the office to an entire day of hell. I don’t know what it is, but it seems that with the holidays approaching I’m just on edge more?
No, it’s not you. Rain, driving-based holidays and snow always bring out the worst in drivers. And days that include horrible commutes–they completely drain you, no?
My worst driving commute was either driving home during the rain of Ivan (where I had to stop more than once), or having to drive home during a horrible snow storm the first winter of my post-collegiate job.
Scariest driving commute involved a car behind me losing control on I-95, driving up onto the concrete barrier (yes, it’s perpendicular to the road at this point), sparks flying everywhere, then miraculously driving down off of it, merging off of the road and exiting at a closeby exit. It’s still the fucking scariest thing I’ve ever witnessed.
Worst train commute: being stuck on an A/C-free (it wasn’t working) car, then being stuck–literally–for 90 minutes, then moving at 20 mph over…20 miles. This was 4th of July weekend, by the way.
But I feel that bad commute stories are the equivalent of the scar stories from JAWS–everyone likes to one-up each other in good spirit. :-) Good luck with your holiday drive!
Dateline 1988 driving from Fullerton, California to Newport Beach, California on the 55 freeway, a commute which I did until moving to NB:
Driving along at about 20 mph in almost gridlock conditions. A car pulls up to my side, my window was half open at this point, and the passenger douses me with a black steaming hot coffee, shocking the hell out of me and causing me to lose momentary control of the car, and I loop out of the lane and back into it to have the same passenger as well as the driver scream obscenities at me. I was scared of getting shot so I rolled up the window and slammed on the brakes, thinking getting rear ended beat getting killed. The perp vehicle kept going forward and I was already behind him and not moving any more. I then exited at the next possible turnoff and called in sick. I really was sick after that.
Waiting with glee for the next horror story.
Happy Thanksgiving!!
